As some of you already know, we'll be moving to China soon. My husband is already in Guangzhou, China and he just told me that the Chinese government had banned Multiply among many other websites there (YouTube is also banned!) Now is there any computer savy out there who could shine some lights in my dim future of living in China? I'd be so devastated if I can't get on here.

| These sites are banned periodically in China based upon the current political climate and whether there is any controversial chatter taking place on the site. Due to the Olympics and Tibetan protests, many sites have been taken down or severely restricted. Once the Olympics have ended there and/or the Tibetan protests diminish, the restrictions will ease up. Multiply has been restricted there before in my experience; sometimes for only a very short time. I find it amusing especially because this place is pretty benign as a rule. However there have been a lot of links and blog entries related to the Tibetan protest and reported police abuses with graphic photos of injured citizens which I am sure will have contributed to the ban. Aside from this inconvenience, I hope you enjoy your time there. Guangzhou is an interesting place and most certainly has a wide variety of extraordinary cuisine! |
 | Wah yg boneng nih Yen.. udah pindah aja ke Jepang... hehehe.. sorry yah malah ngeledek. Anyway, mudah2an hanya sebentar say, aduh negara mana lagi nih nanti ikut2an nge block MP..hiks..hiks... |

 | Hai Maureen salam kenal, I LOVE to read your blog :):) Anyway, gw sering ke China and spend 2-4 weeks setiap kalo di China and yes, multiply is banned in China since long time already, together with many other blog sites even friendster ( you still can open friendster but not the friendster blog ) Jangankan multiply, waktu situasi di Tibet baru pecah aja gw kbtualn lg di Beijing and ga bs buka satupun news sites ( yahoo, cnn, bcc, even Italian comunist newspaper site!!) juga ga bs buka email!! Tapi itu cuma bertahan 2 hari koq, setelah Yahoo dan news laennya mengoreksi berita mereka mengenai jumlah korban di Tibet sesuai dgn yg pemerintah China umumkan, site2 news tsb bs diakses lagi. Sorry kepanjangan, anyway Good Luck in Guangzhou :):) |

| It's unbelieavable really how on these era of freedom in information these things still exists. Makes one appreciate the freedom of expression in some country especially the US. I've been hearing plenty of praise about the food over in Guangzhou so as a chinese food lover I'll be in heaven LOL. Did you lived there before? Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Yes, it certainly is a shock after living in this society which, with all its ills, still allows far greater freedoms than many others. It really brings it home for many westerners for whom the idea of a free and democratic society vs. those in countries like PRC is just words until a simple thing like posting some travel photos or a cheerful blog entry becomes impossible because the invisible hand of the government has moved to deny access to their blog. Most people I know who have experienced this, myself included, experience it like a revelation; "Oh! this is what it means!". Of course there are many other examples of it evident as you travel around but these days it is less and less visible as the apparent daily lives of people there resemble more and more the lives of people in the west. In the old days there, I couldn't go anywhere without an official escort and always had my "papers" with me to identify who I was, why I was there, what I was doing, and above all, the blessing of some high level official to make smooth the way. I used to travel there about 4 months a year. I still go there usually about one month a year.I did a lot of business in Guangzhou and elsewhere but these days am mostly in Shanghai or Nanjing. With all its warts, I love China and hope that the positive movements toward a more open society continue steadily and that the issues in Tibet and elsewhere are addressed properly. China has changed quite dramatically in a very few years and as always, with change comes a degree of chaos. I think the pressure from in and outside of China to bring greater attention to human rights issues, etc will help to advance improvement there but it will certainly take time.I also think we in the western democracies could do a lot more to advance the causes of human rights by leading the way in addressing our own failures in that respect as we also focus light on our neighbors' defects. I don't mean that in anyway as an apology for anything which goes on elsewhere but simply my own feeling of shame at the many things which are ignored here over which our country has direct influence while we make much of the transgressions of our neighbors. Ok, I am getting off the soap box now haha. In the meantime, let's hope you get your Multiply site access asap! And remember what they say about Chinese cuisine (especially in the south :) ) "we eat everything with legs but a table and everything that flies but a plane." |
 | Very well written thought Richard, I truly have a greater appreciation of the whole freedom that often got forgotten in the western hemisphere. Much appreciation for sharing your own personal experience with China, I noticed that they've been tightening their security due to the olympic that my husband even needs somekind of a police clearence to enter China. He also still needs to take care of a lot of paperworks. Let's put an Amen for China's better future in all layers of life there.
I had a really good laugh about your last part, that's a quote worth printed! LOL! |
| Glad you enjoyed it! (it's TRUE!) haha Well, I am sure you will have a great adventure living in China including any inconveniences and deprivations you endure; it will create memories and stories to tell for a lifetime :) |
 | banned because of FITNA movie too? ck...ck...ck...i still dont understand y gov. of Indonesia or China or else banned the blogs? I saw the movie, its nothin'. I mean people has different opinion about religions, assumed only 18 yrs old and up could see youtube or else, dont u think they should understand enough about the crap of religions? |
 | Oooh I will miss reading your blog or seeing your pics:( Kampung sekali pakai ngebanned2x segala |
Cihuy!!!! |
