The pediatrician that I met, Dr. Lineus Hewis, Sp.A is a really good doctor and not one who easily prescribed antibiotic like the previous doctor. I already made an appointment there for Alexander's 18 months check up.

Another great blog I found about flying with kids. Written by a former flight attendant of 13 years and a mother herself, she have a lot of good pointers to help you prepare both yourself and your kids for travelling by plane.

Blog EntryKorean Air, just a slogan?Apr 17, '08 7:01 PM
for everyone

I finally have a chance to sit down and write about how our trip went this second time. Just to warn you tho’, it’ll be quite long.

We left Dothan, AL with the first flight again (read: 6:00 AM). Thankfully, Alex was in a good mood despite being woken up so early at 4:30 AM. While we were in the waiting area an Asian looking lady approached me and asked if I’m from the Philippines like her. After we introduced ourselves we found out that we both will be flying Korean Air, she’s going to Manila by herself for her father’s funeral.

While we were checking in at Delta’s counter, however, the lady there gave me such a hard time about my checked in luggages. I had to argue so hard with her because she said they cannot check my luggages through since we’ll be staying overnight in Korea. All they could do was checking it to Korea. I was furious!!!! This is the same lady that checked through our baggages the last time we went home just 6 months ago. The line behind us were already long that’s why I followed my husband’s suggestion to back off and to just talk with Korean air staff in Atlanta about it and to have them change the tags.

From Dothan to Atlanta, Alex did great and when we got there this lady offered her help to carry my suitcase (I had to bring 1 big diaper backpacks, 1 small backpack for Alex and a small suitcase). We’re lucky that we landed at the same terminal our Korean air will be so we don’t have to take the train like we had to last time.

This lady was really a God send (I am so sorry to forget her name!) we both sat in the waiting area together and talked, she even let me go get some stuffs at the airport while she watched our carry-ons. Then more ‘angels’ came our ways as we meet an elderly Philippines couple who joined us at the gate. They were super nice!

By the time the check-in counter open we were the first people that got our boarding passes. Unfortunately, Korean air staff there was being hard headed about my case. I had to talked to their boss (that’s what I assumed since he’s Korean) who offer no help whatsoever! He said it is impossible to find my luggages now and even if they do find them chances are they will arrive in Jakarta late, which means they won’t make it to Jakarta along with us. The only solution they had was for me to pick up all of my luggages in Korea then bring it to Korean air counter to store it for the next day flight. I was fuming, literarily! I even told them “Can’t you see I have my hands full with a toddler, a stroller, my carry ons?” They won’t budge and easily said it is Delta’s fault. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband called Korean Air office and he was told these people should be able to find my stuffs and just change the tags especially since we had more than 5 hours before the flight. Easy, right? Nope!!!!! They won’t do it, they won’t budge so I said alright,  I’ll get my stuffs in Korea but I NEED HELP! He assured me that they’ll send somebody to help me there. This clearly shows that they do not have a standard procedure when it comes to stuffs like this. I mean, it seems that they will do whatever they want despite what their head office said. How very unprofessional! When I bought the tickets directly from them I also checked about checking my luggages through our final destination, which is Jakarta and they assured me yes I could do that.

I guess I caused quite a scene there that made this guy, an American asked me what’s going on and I explained to him and he shook his head saying “You know what, they are just too lazy to find your bags!” He then continued to say that I should write Korean Air a complaint letter especially since this is the second time I’m having problems with them. He said he did just that a few months ago when he flew to the States and his checked in bags were destroyed. His complaint letter earns him an upgrade from coach to business class for the flight he’s taking with us. Nice, I told him but I will be avoiding Korean Air like a plaque now (Shinta, let me borrow your term about China Air! LOL!) after these very unpleasant experiences.

During the almost 14 hours flight to Korea Alex was doing really great, even I got amazed by how good he behaved. God sent another angel for us, this time a Korean lady who sat with us on the third seat. She kindly said to me that she asked the flight attendant to move her so we could have to seat. Can you imagine that? She said that way Alex could lay down and sleep on those two seats. How sweet! God bless her heart for doing this! She even helped me out translating when the flight attendant checked my pre-order kids’ meals for Alex. I asked them if they have whole milk for him, a word that’s clearly lost to her so that nice lady stepped in and explained it to the flight attendant. She told me that yes they have whole milk and will give it to me when they serve the meals. Phew!

Unfortunately, they did not give any milk or even water when they serve the kid’s meals. I had to ask for it! The meals were unbelievably disgusting. I had ordered chicken nuggets and hamburger (they only had that, spaghetti and pizza to choose from). Alex spit the chicken nuggets out and when I tried a bite, I don’t blame him at all. It was nasty! Luckily I bought some chicken nuggets from McDonald in Atlanta before we boarded, which he happily ate. The hamburger was horrible. OMG! I regret not taking pictures of them now. The lettuce were too wilted, the French fries looks like its 2 days old. There’s no way I am feeding that to Alex. Luckily I had enough snacks and food also milks (I bought those UHT milks in boxes that require no refrigeration) with me to last us a week on a boat from Alaska!

Speaking of milk, I was pissed with one of the flight attendant when I kindly ask for milk for the second time. Knowing that they don’t really understand ‘whole milk’ I kept the empty box they handed me the first time and simply show it to them. When I did that she said ok went to the galley came back with a sour face and said in a tone that made me want to slap her face “This is the last one!!!” Ugh! How rude! I ignored her and just said to myself next time I need milk I’d simply look for another flight attendant to ask for. And guess what? When I did just that, this different flight attendant happily handed them out and even ask if I need more. Huh! I wrote down that other flight attendant’s name so she won’t escape my complaint letter.

Although the plane was equipped with those small personal TV screen in every seats, I went ahead and bring a portable DVD player for Alex with his favorites shows (Blue’s Clues, Go Diego Go, etc.). It added up to the heavy stuffs I had to drag along but it was a life saver! When he got bored I quickly turned it on and voila…he’s as calm as a clam! And on the flight from Korea to Jakarta they don’t have to personal TV since it was an Airbus 330 plane. So, moms…a portable DVD player are definitely a valuable investment for your long haul flights.

By the time we got to Korea, there was NO BODY there to help me out like they had promised me. Not a soul! So this time I just brace myself although Alex was screaming in his stroller wanting to get out of it and walk around. Luckily, there was a Korean air counter right behind the baggage carousel. The guy took my stuffs and said they’ll change the tags.

Another angel was sent our way when we were waiting for the shuttle bus that took us the hotel. This angel came in a totally unexpected form, a rugged, long haired, long bearded, scruffy looking backpacker guy from Germany. He helped me put all our stuffs in the bus. Bless your heart too, Mr.!

During our flights to Jakarta, Alex slept 95% and their service was again far better than from Atlanta to Korea. I even talked with one of the flight attendant, an Indonesian girl and I honestly praised her for their services. She said “Why? Are they bitchy?” LOL! How true! I noticed that they will bend over backwards for their ‘bule’ passenger or other Koreans. Maybe I’m just being too critical, I don’t know but that’s what I observed.

Unfortunately, the smooth trip with Alex came with a price. He got a jetlag now from sleeping so much during the flights! LOL! Now he’d fall asleep at around 6:00 – 7:00 PM to around 1 or 2 in the morning then he’ll wake up again at around 5 or 6. But last night he did great, he went to sleep at around 6:30 PM and didn’t wake up until 5. I am crossing my fingers that his jetlag will be over soon because it’s impossible to keep him awake as he’d be super cranky.

Oh and another blessing…a day after we got here his first set of molars (on the bottom part) finally popped out! I can’t imagine how painful it would be if it cut through when we were in the planes. Ouchy!

Well, that’s our experience. There will be no third time the charm when it comes to Korean air…as I vouched not to fly them ever again! That letter of complaint? I’m still working on them LOL.

PS: Loren, you are right, having a baby, especially travelling with them makes us grew our fangs and become fearless LOL!

CARES is designed specifically for aviation use for children age 1 and older who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds. These youngsters are old enough to be in their own seats, but are too small for the seat belt alone to protect them. Their bodies cannot withstand the jolts that are common in routine transportation, much less emergency situations, and they flail forward or slide beneath the seat belt if they are not held securely in place.

Read more about CARES

I just ordered this device for our upcoming trip to Indonesia and from the reviews and the fact it's way safer than the Baby B'air thing assured me that I'm doing the right thing ordering this. Although both device is FAA certified, it would still be safer to use CARES as Baby B'air will only make your child/baby become a human air bag should an accident occur during the flight.

I will write more after we use it.

Oh, also I've found on Ebay there are some seller who will actually rent out their CARES for a mere $15.00 plus S&H.

Update:
Korean air actually allowed this great device to be use onboard their flight. But one thing tho', you might want to practice using it at home before your trip because it's quite tricky to adjust the straps for the first time (I didn't practice enough at home LOL!)

Blog EntryHave Baby... Will Travel?Dec 3, '07 7:54 AM
for everyone

Our journey to go to Indonesia started on October 22, 2007. Early flight out of Dothan, AL to Atlanta, GA then from there we flew Korean Airline to Incheon, Korea. During that longest leg of our trip (almost  15 hours), Alex was behaving  so good, he slept most of the time. There was only one thing on that flight that makes me fuming…here’s the story. I bought like 5 bottled waters in Atlanta airport for Alex’s formula. Unfortunately, not all of them can fit in my backpack, so I put some of them in my carry on, which I put inside the overhead bin. We were almost in Korea when I realized I almost run out of the water from my backpack, so I kindly asked the flight attendant if I could get some bottled water. She said okay, went to the galley, and returned empty handedly, saying “I’m sorry Ma'am, we don’t have anymore bottled water.” Say what???????? We’re on an international flight and there is no way in the world they will be running out of bottled water, I rest my case and decided to just pull down my carry on suitcase, grab 2 bottles out and believe me it’s hard to put that suitcase back up there with one of your hand carrying a baby. Luckily, there’s an American guy that sat right behind us who lent a hand. I got even more upset when I saw them handing out drinks and I saw mineral water on their cart. Mind you, I did not ask any help at all from the flight attendant during that flight even after one of them offered “I can hold your baby if you have to go to the lavatory.” So, ladies, don’t count on them airlines to give you bottled water, bring your own and lots of it!

We got to Incheon, Korea after 5 PM local time and guess what…we got lost! I was told that I suppose to find Korean Airline desk and pick up the hotel voucher then go to the hotel but I can’t seems to find the right booth, the airport staffs doesn’t really helped much either with their ‘barely understandable’ English, the first guy in a uniform that I asked doesn’t even speak English just pointed to the empty Information desk. I stood there waiting for nearly 20 minutes but not one person shows up behind the desk. Bummer, so I asked another guy in uniform behind the immigration desk, he said I have to walk a few meters down the terminal and I’ll find it there. A few meters turned out to be longer than I expected (actually, it’s on the other end of the airport), believe me…pushing a stroller with a heavy backpack straps to your back and a small wheeled carry on suitcase will slow you down tremendously, it also required some balancing act skills to pull your suitcase and pushing the stroller at the same time. Okay, so we finally found the Korean Airline desk and I was relieve to hear the lady said our hotel and next flight has been confirmed but my relieve was short lived because she said again, in broken English that I have to go downstairs and find another Korean Air desk there. Bummer…she can’t exactly pint point where it’s at just told me it’s downstairs. So, down we went, found another desk and again were ping pong to another desk which is this time, thanks God was the right one. Unfortunately, my walking doesn’t ended there, the guy told me (this time his English was much better) that the hotel’s shuttle bus will pick us up from Door no. 11 and we were at Door no. 2. Geez!

I didn’t get to the hotel until almost 9 PM with a totally cranky and tired baby in my hands. That poor boy just had enough so I skipped dinner time at the hotel and just take care of him in the room. He fell asleep pretty fast. The hotel, Grand Hyatt Residence was a really nice hotel. I tried to sleep but only managed to get roughly 4 hours of sleeping.

In the morning, I just let Alex be totally free in the hotel room and crawl everywhere. We had breakfast and lunch before we went back to the airport for our next flight to Jakarta. Unfortunately, Alex started to get really cranky while we were still waiting by the gate. He cried and cried and cried and I can’t seem to sooth him at all. Enough said, I was pretty aware of other passengers stare at us, at me. Since I’m travelling alone with a baby, we got the ‘privilege’ to pre-board before others, I tried just about everything to calm him but nothing works, some people offer their sympathy by trying to cheer Alex too but that also doesn’t help much. Then I saw that his nose was runny and he had a little cough, that’s when I realized he must not be feeling well. He only slept for half an hour or so during that 7 hours flight to Jakarta and spent most of it crying. Poor baby! They provided us with a baby bassinet, which he totally hates. Due to some turbulences I can’t carry him around the plane too much, thanks God the flight attendants were all pretty helpful. There’s this one flight attendant that seems to worried about Alex and how I got my hands full that I can’t even eat or drink anything, she went so far to help us by holding a cup of water for me so I could drink it (mind you, I did not ask her to do that, she offered it to me). Their services were much better than the Atlanta – Korea route, maybe because they have a joint service with Garuda Indonesia, who knows… Anyway, after several hours of dealing with a sick and cranky baby, I just decided to ignore those ‘you’re not doing enough or you’re a bad parent’ stares people gave me and put on my ignore goggles, because you know what…there’s only so much you can do as a parent to calm your baby and sometimes you just had to let them cry it out especially when you’re in that situation, Alex finally settled down in the last hour before we landed.

I was so glad to landed in Jakarta and found my brother Danny there. We went straight to the hotel and Alex immediately took to Danny, which is something amazing because normally he’s a bit timid with strangers especially man. We only spent a night in Jakarta and flew to Balikpapan the next morning. Oh and guess what...the morning in Jakarta I saw Alex's top tooth popped put! That's why he was so cranky!

By the time we got to Balikpapan, Alex’s cold and cough was getting worst he even developed a mild fever. My father immediately said we need to take him to a doctor. Unfortunately, SOS is no longer operated in Balikpapan but my mother said there’s this one doctor that used to work for SOS and now have his practice specializing for expatriates in Pertamina Hospital. So off we go there, he said it’s only normal for a baby that young to catch a cold due to the change of weather and the long flights. He prescribed some medicines; thanks God Alex get rid of his cold pretty fast.

For our flight back, it was quite an experience as well. Our flight got delayed for over 30 minutes in Jakarta and it was already after 10 PM, passed Alex’s bed time, so understandably, he’s cranky and tired. He already cried when we went inside to find the gate. We were a bit late because by the time we reached the gate, they are already boarding and when I pushed his stroller in with him crying and screaming, I saw this Korean guy, presumably Korean Airline’s boss talked in broken English to his Indonesian staffs and pointed at Alex. All I could hear was he repeatedly saying No, No, No.  I didn’t hold back and just came to him and look him in the eyes and said “Are you talking about my baby?” I can tell he was quite shock to see me staring at him like that, I just can’t stand people like him, talking about my baby as if I’m not even in the room! He told me that I can’t board the plane if Alex is still crying, well Mister you are picking the wrong mother to discriminate just because I am travelling with a baby! I told him straight in his face that my baby is tired, it’s past his bed time, and chances are he’ll fall asleep any minute and I already paid for his tickets and he can’t tell me that we are not allowed to fly just because he’s crying. I was furious of his reactions and so ready to pick a battle with him when an Indonesian staff, a lady approached me and said it’s better if we boarded last until every body else is settle because they had another 15 minutes delay. Well, that is understandable and makes sense. So I sat there holding Alex and he did fell asleep even before we boarded the plane. Sometimes you just have to stand up for your baby when things are tend to discriminate you.

Well, I had learnt a lot during this trip and although I’m glad that I am able to do it, next time, I’d rather go with my husband, besides having someone to share the ‘work' to take care of our baby on board, I’ll have more baggage allowance for all the shopping I wanted to do LOL.  So to answer my own question in this blog's tittle...I'd say SURE!
